Mgahinga National Park

Gorilla trekking, Golden Monkey tracking
The Mgahinga gorilla forest is mostly visited for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and bird watching. .
Mgahinga gorilla national park is a small reserve located at the extreme southern tip of Uganda. This park is part of the Virunga mountains, a range comprising of six extinct and three active volcanoes on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. Three extinct peaks lie partially within Mgahinga; Muhabura at 4,127 m, Gahinga 3,475 m and Sabinyo at 3,645 m their peaks are covered in Afro-alpine vegetation, while the slopes and lower parts are covered in Afro-Montana forest with a wide variety of wildlife.
Mgahinga gorilla national park is well known for gorilla tracking to most people or tourists yet there are no permanent gorillas dwelling in Mgahinga. However, a reasonable number freely moves within the park ranging from Uganda and across to Rwanda’s Parc des Volcans, and one gorilla family frequently spends months at a stretch within Mgahinga.
Anybody who enjoys challenging treks and day hikes could happily spend a week based at Mgahinga without ever going gorilla tracking.
From estimates, roughly 45 gorillas spend part of the year in Mgahinga, Rwanda, and Congo including the habituated gorillas. The advantage of this for budget travelers, you don’t need to book your permit in advance so payment is done after you have seen the gorillas. The problem will be no guarantee of seeing gorillas being present in Mgahinga on any given day.
