Detailed 3 Days Murchison Falls Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe – Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Murchison Falls

Drive time: approximately 6 hours | Distance: 305 km

06:30 — Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel, residence or agreed meeting point in Kampala or Entebbe. After a short briefing you head north through Luwero, passing farms, trading centres and roadside markets as the landscape opens out.

09:30 — Arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided rhino trek on foot. Unlike a vehicle-based game drive, you walk through the sanctuary with a trained ranger, approaching Uganda's reintroduced southern white rhinos at close range while learning about their behaviour, habitat and the breeding programme. Allow about two hours.

12:30 — Lunch at Ziwa, Kabalega Diner or in Masindi, depending on timing, before continuing toward the park.

Late afternoon — Visit the Top of Murchison Falls. Here the Victoria Nile is forced through a gorge barely eight metres wide before dropping 43 metres. You hear the falls before you see them, and the spray carries a rainbow on most clear afternoons. Continue to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Victoria Nile Boat Cruise

06:30 — Early breakfast, then out onto the northern bank savannah circuits. The first two hours after sunrise are the most productive window of the day: temperatures are cool, predators are still moving, and the light is best for photography.

Your guide chooses the route based on recent sightings, seasonal grass height and road conditions. Expect lions on the Buligi tracks, large giraffe and buffalo herds in the open grassland, and elephants moving between woodland and the river.

11:00 — Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest through the hottest part of the day.

Victoria Nile boat cruise

14:00 — Board the three-hour launch cruise upstream from Paraa to the base of Murchison Falls. The riverbanks hold some of the densest hippo and Nile crocodile concentrations in East Africa, with elephants and buffaloes coming down to drink and waterbirds working the shallows.

Commonly seen from the boat: hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, monitor lizards, African fish eagles, malachite and pied kingfishers, goliath herons and egrets. As the boat nears the gorge the current strengthens and the falls come into view — the single most photographed moment of the trip.

Murchison Falls Game Circuits

Buligi

The best-known circuit in the park, running between the Victoria and Albert Niles. Open savannah broken by borassus palms and acacia, and the most reliable area for lions, giraffes, buffaloes, kob and hartebeest.

Pakuba

Rolling grassland with wide sightlines, good for photographers who want animals framed against open country rather than scrub. Elephants and giraffes are common here.

Queen and Victoria tracks

A mix of woodland, savannah and riverine habitat. Sightings vary more by season here, which is where an experienced guide earns their keep.

Delta

Where the Victoria Nile spreads into Lake Albert. Wetland habitat, strongest for birders, and the area to head for if shoebill is on your list.

Is it possible to start the safari from Entebbe?

Yes. We collect from Entebbe International Airport, an Entebbe hotel, Kampala or another agreed location. Entebbe pickups add roughly an hour to Day 1.

What animals will I see?

Rothschild's giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, Jackson's hartebeest, waterbucks, warthogs, hippos and Nile crocodiles are seen on almost every departure. Lions are a good chance on early morning drives, leopards are uncommon, and white rhinos are near certain at Ziwa.

Shall I see the Big Five on this safari?

Four of the five are realistic: rhino at Ziwa, plus lion, elephant and buffalo in the park. Leopards are present but elusive and should be treated as a bonus rather than an expectation.

How long is the Murchison Falls boat cruise?

The standard upstream launch to the base of the falls runs about three hours return, departing early afternoon. A separate downstream Delta cruise is available as an add-on for birders.

Do I need to cross the Paraa ferry?

Not anymore since the bridge was constructed linking the northern and southern banks.

Is this safari suitable for children?

Yes. Being private, the itinerary can be adjusted for shorter drives and earlier lodge arrivals. Note that Ziwa applies a minimum age for the on-foot rhino trek, so tell us your children's ages and we will confirm arrangements.

Can I add chimpanzee tracking?

Yes, in Budongo Forest at Kaniyo Pabidi, but we recommend adding a fourth day rather than compressing the three-day schedule. Permits must be booked in advance.
