Best Time to travel
For the best wildlife experiences, the periods from June to August and late November to February are excellent for visiting Uganda. During these times, the weather is favorable, making June to September particularly popular as peak safari seasons. Therefore, it is essential to book your tour and gorilla permits well in advance.
Conversely, the low season falls between March to May and October to November. These months coincide with the rainy seasons, which are less ideal for game viewing and gorilla trekking. During these periods, park roads become slippery, forest paths grow dense, and the rains can diminish the quality of game drives. Additionally, animals are less likely to congregate at waterholes due to the abundance of food and water. However, the rainy season attracts fewer visitors, and luxury hotels often reduce their prices, making it an opportune time for those seeking a more private safari experience.
Nonetheless, Uganda can be visited year-round, and there is nothing to prevent you from coming whenever an opportunity arises. Due to the effects of global warming, rains can occur at any time of the month, and the dry season can sometimes appear unexpectedly. Gorilla trekking is available throughout the year, and nothing, including rain, can stop this activity.
What to pack
Camera and a pair of binoculars: Your family, colleagues, and friends will never know about your amazing experience in Uganda if you have nothing to show for it. Therefore, remember to travel with a good camera and a pair of binoculars. Additionally, it is important to note that flash cameras are not allowed for gorilla trekking.
Water: Staying hydrated is crucial whenever you go out for game drives, gorilla or chimpanzee trekking, and other day activities. Since Uganda can be hot during the day, especially during the dry season, your body will require plenty of water. Therefore, ensure that you travel with water filtration tablets or accept the mineral water available in our tour vans.
Long shirts and trousers: The forests in Bwindi, Maramagambo, and Kibale have thick undergrowth. Consequently, you will need long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect yourself against sharp tree branches and insects.
Socks and gloves: These items will help you tuck in your trousers and shirts to avoid crawling insects. Moreover, gardening gloves are perfect for grabbing leaves and tree branches as you navigate through the dense forests. They will also protect your feet and hands from thorns found in the savannah.
Hiking boots: Sturdy hiking boots are essential for forest trekking and nature walks. Ensure that they are waterproof and comfortable, as forest trails and park roads are often mud-filled during the rainy season.
Rain jacket: Do not forget to carry a rain jacket regardless of which month you plan to travel. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest receives some rain throughout the year, and global warming means that rains can appear at any time of the year.
Light snack: Light snacks are important when tracking gorillas and chimpanzees. You can ask the hotel to prepare something for you when you are heading out for morning activities.
