Days 9: Bwindi Gorilla Trekking
Mountain gorilla trekking is an experience that thrills every tracker. For those that successfully complete a gorilla trekking, they count it as a privilege. The fact that you travelled this far to the end of the world in one of the oldest medieval forests is also a world heritage site. You will enjoy your encounter with the gentle giants.
It all begins lazily in the morning which is often chilled with changing temperature of the forest. Your mood is then lifted by performers who welcome the guests with local dance. While this is happening your guide registers you for the gorilla trekking. Then you are grouped and allocated a particular gorilla family. The ranger in charge will then give you a briefing on what to expect. From here your guide will drive you to the starting point or you will start walking into the forest straight away.
Trekking in the forest
The terrain keeps changing as your venture deep into the forest. Trekkers will battle with twigs, thrones, wet soggy mad and above all the hilly terrain. However, the rangers have come up with clever ways to determine that all trekkers complete the gorilla trekking. The slowest trekker will lead the group and the rangers factor in short or stops to point out vegetation that is part of the gorilla diet.
It will feel like they are communicating and sending messages to you through their eyes and facial expressions. Gorillas are curious, and they like to inspect their visitors.
The trek will take 2-6 hours depending on how far the mountain gorillas have travelled foraging for food.
Finding the mountain gorillas
You will find the mountain gorillas on the forest floor feeding or resting. Depending on how long you take trekking and finding the mountain gorillas. 10 Days Uganda Safari offers a chance to trek the mountain gorillas in the Bwindi forest.
Time with the Mountain gorillas
When you find the gorilla family you will follow it or watch it for a period of 1 hour. And it is then that the ranger will signal a departure call to leave the mountain gorillas to carry on with their daily life. The time your spend with the gorillas is precious make sure you enjoy it.
When the gorillas are found, trackers must keep a 7-meter distance. Yet sometimes, the gorillas break the rule and draw very close to the tracker.
Mothers keep infants close by as they knuckle-walk on three limbs, and toddlers scamper beneath their father’s watchful gaze. You can grasp how you and the gorillas have much in common, which will amaze you.
In the 1970s, Diane Fossey said they would be extinct by the millennium. Instead, gorilla trekking marks the highlight of the best Uganda safari tour.
