Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary tracking
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a conservation project located in Uganda. It was established to reintroduce and protect the endangered white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) in Uganda, where they had been extinct for nearly 30 years. The sanctuary is in Nakasongola District, approximately 176 kilometers (109 miles) north of Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
Key facts and information about the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary:
- Rhinoceros Conservation: The primary goal of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is to provide a safe and conducive environment for the white rhinoceros to breed and thrive. White rhinos are the largest rhinoceros species classified as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
- Reintroduction Efforts: The sanctuary started its white rhino reintroduction program in 2005. Six southern white rhinos were brought to the sanctuary from Kenya. Since then, the population has been steadily increasing through successful breeding.
- Guided Rhino Tracking: The sanctuary offers guided walking safaris to visitors who want to observe and learn about white rhinos in their natural habitat. These guided tours allow tourists to get close to these magnificent animals while maintaining their safety.
- Other Wildlife: In addition to white rhinos, the sanctuary is home to various other wildlife species, including antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and an array of bird species.
- Conservation and Education: The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is not only focused on rhino conservation but also on education and community involvement. They engage in outreach programs to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
- Accommodations: The sanctuary offers lodging options for visitors, including campsites and a lodge, making it possible for tourists to spend more time exploring the area and supporting the conservation efforts.
The success of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in reestablishing a breeding population of white rhinos in Uganda is a testament to the importance of conservation efforts. These efforts not only protect endangered species but also provide opportunities for eco-tourism and public education.
The journey will continue to Kampala, where you will be dropped at the hotel or taken to the airport to end the Uganda Big Five safaris.
